Israel 1970 10 Lirot Mikveg Israel Centenary Coin

KM#55. This proof coin was issued as part of the 22nd anniversary of the independence of Israel. This coin commemorates the Mikveh Israel Centenary, which was the founding of the first agricultural school in Israel. The obverse of the coin shows an ear of corn, the value (10 Lirot), the denomination Lirot in Hebrew, and around the bottom edge “Israel” in Arabic, Hebrew and English. The reverse has a symbolic plow under the Hebrew words for “Centenary of Mikveh Israel”. At the bottom of the reverse coin in Hebrew is “Alliance Israelite Universite”. This was an organisation founded in 1860 to fight antisemitism. The coin has an edge inscription in Hebrew that reads “22nd Year of the State of Israel”. The coin was designed by Shlomo Rotem and was minted by the Swiss Federal Mint in Berne, Switzerland.

This coin weighs 26 grams, measures 37mm and is minted from 90% silver. It is 1 of 22,434 proofs minted. 47,509 circulation coins were also minted but by the Kretschmer Mint in Jerusalem.
