Mexico Mint Spanish 8 reales (pillar dollars) encrusted shipwreck timber. 1730’s.

Possibly from the Reijgersdaal (Reygersdahl or Reigersdaal) an East Indiaman which sank in a gale between Robben and Dassen Islands on October 25th 1747 carrying 8 chests or almost 30,000 silver coins. The wreck was discovered in 1979 and much of the coins have been recovered by salvage divers. These have been sold in various auctions worldwide since.
