Australia 1952 Shilling Broadstrike Error
On closer inspection of the reverse of this broadstrike we can see an interesting result of the strike without the collar to restrain the edge of the coin. The lettering of SHILLING at the very edge of the coin LIN has distorted the edge of the coin. The edge has flowed out where there was no letter and where there was a letter it flowed up into that letter. It’s given the edge a crenulated appearance. I particularly like the analogy of a ball of plasticine squashed in your fingers with it oozing out between them.
