Australia 1984 Dollar PCGS MS62 Wrong Planchet
A dollar from the first year it was minted in Australia -1984. A correct dollar is struck on an aluminium bronze planchet weighing 9 grams. This dollar weighs just 4.6 grams and appears to be of a copper-nickel composition. The Australian 10 cent weighs a little more than this (5.66g) so that’s not the simple answer. It’s more likely been struck on a foreign coin or other medal planchet.
A test using XRF has determined the planchet composition is copper-nickel 71/29.
PCGS graded this coin as MS62 and it now lives in an error slab with the description “Mint Error Struck on 4.6gm Planchet”.
