Australian World War 1 Love Token – From Alf to Emily with Love 2315

An interesting Australian love token or forget-me-not penny that most likely dates to World War 1 and originates in South Australia. It is crudely made from a British Edward VII penny with attached brooch fittings (the pin is missing) and has been gilded. The reverse has been skimmed off and the following message stamped into it:

FORGET ME NOT
FROM ALF
WITH LOVE
TO
EMILY
2315

To date we have not been able to identify Alf even though the love token appears to include a service number. Note that we have checked re-orderings of the service number including 2135, 2351, 23150, 2315A, 2315B, 3215, 2314, and 2316.
