Australia 1966 Sydney Coin Club Decimal Currency Changeover Commemorative Medallion Cadmium Plated
Sydney Coin Club Commemorative medallion series no. 2 (obverse), reverse Decimal Currency Changeover 14th February 1966.
Look closely at the obverse of this cadmium plated commemorative medal. Those familiar with Australian pre-decimal coinage will see a glaring error immediately. More shortly.
This medal is 35 millimetres in diameter and was minted in copper, silver and this type, cadmium plated. Mintage of the copper and silver is 50 pieces but it is not known how many cadmium plated examples were made. Carlisle reference is 1966/11. Issued in a lovely red velvet lined box with “C-DAY MEDALLION POUNDS TO DOLLARS 14. FEBRUARY 1966” on the inside lid. This example weight 16.7g.
Those still scratching their heads about the error, it’s in plain sight, on the right image. A 1964 Australian florin doesn’t exist! The last florin was dated 1963.
